The Apple World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) is a month away and will be the place where Apple launches a number of new features related to iOS. It will also be the site where Apple debuts a new interconnected "Smart Home" platform. The Financial Times reports that Apple plans to make a "big play" to create a system that would link home lighting, Apple TV, audio equipment, and other devices under one system. All of those products would then connect to the iPhone or iPad as the center of the integrated network.
Possible examples of the new iOS connected home would to have lights turn on according to the presence of a smartphone entering a room. It could also use a phone to control a television, create alarms and lights according to profiles setup in iOS apps, or manage home entertainment options. Apple would work with manufacturers to create compatible accessories that would bear special logos signaling their connecting to the system.
Apple would be one of many "internet of things" participants. AT&T already has invested heavily in creating a connected home for its customers, and Google plans to use Android, Nest, Google Now, and its partners to do the same for Android products.
